So, this week’s post should most accurately be started with, “Dear Penthouse, I never thought it would happen to me!” Saturday, I began and ended my storied career in competitive eating. Up Dog in Independence had its grand opening, featuring a hot dog eating contest! How can I NOT participate in such walking-distance-from-my-apartment frivolities?

Honestly, I probably would’ve just spectated in this case, but my mom had a big mouth and blabbed to my ten year old nephew that I was gonna do it. So, since his shitty grandma wouldn’t enter him in the contest, I had to step forth and avoid being called a pussy at Thanksgiving by somebody who doesn’t even have pubes yet.

I started out strong, downing almost 3 of the bastards in the first minute. Thinking, “This is what it feels like to be a God?!” Then, quickly fell to earth due to my blasphemy, only managing to kill four more dogs in the final nine minutes, giving me a grand total of seven.

The winner managed to knock out twenty! And, I couldn’t have eaten another one with a gun to my head. In fact, the last one tasted similar to what I’d imagine to be a hobo’s asshole. But, let’s put this in perspective – Joey Chestnut’s record stands at SIXTY-EIGHT! That’s right, he ate almost as many dogs a minute as I did the entire contest! Salute a true American!

Also, in related news, Saturday, I had my first bout with bulimia.

So’s, this week I mainly holed up making drawrings and cursing my absence from Comic Con, but Saturday, I did hit an old haunt – The Broadway Café – for a mean cuppa joe and a table to thumbnail some comics pages. (New one up at smalltimerscomic.com)

And, a weekday trip up the street from my house to Da Pizza Place, which was shit tons better than expected from a Truman Road dive.

So’s like the guy at the end of the Lone Ranger says, “Tune in next time!”

So’s like, this week’s adventures started with a trip to the Ameristar Casino, where I won big! By not gambling at all and watching Predators, the baddest ass B movie I’ve seen since Jurassic Park 3.

Saturday was a trip to the Crossroads to Grinder’s where I got the only thing baddest ass’er than the aforementioned Predators in the form of their monster meatball grinder.

Then a stopoff for KC’s own ‘lil Jurassic Park at Union Station’s Dino exhibit.

This week coincidentally ended up with a lotta walking around Westport on separate days.

Westport Flea Market makes some badass burgers, and fantastic fried cheese. Plus they got a DOPE ride out front.

Sung Son Vietnamese Bistro had some fantastic pho and a pretty slick buffet. (Normally, I’m not so big on the grab and eat troughs, but the bowl o’ noodles changed my opinion.)

Saw Winter’s Bone at the always awesome Tivoli Theatre.

And, via satellite witnessed Joey Chestnut’s uncontested win at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Extravaganza.

Required Watchin’ – Every Which Way But Loose. It’s Clint Eastwood and an ape with a heap of biker beating and bare knuckled boxing!

So’s like, this week, was a trip to the pop’s house in the woods of Salem, Mo for Messican food at Big-o’s. (No idea what that’s supposed to mean, but the shrimp burrito was solid enough considering how far we were from a coast.)

Stopping at by ‘lil bro’z house to see the baby.

And, my aunt cooking biscuits and gravy at the gram’s house.

So’s like, this week, was father’s day. So’s, I went with the nephew, niece, moms and stepdad to Corner Café in Independence where I chowed on an awesome omelet and super cinnamon roll. Also, I was ecstatic to discover the level of my peers when my ten year old nephew made sure to elbow me in the arm to show off the fact that he was dropping paper in his little sister’s hair.

Thursday, I stopped by the Pharoah theatre as they were setting up for freebie summer moofies.

Jason’s Deli in the O.P. made a rockin’ reuben on rye.

So’s like, this week, Friday was a gorgeous, long (albeit sweaty) walk in Shawnee Mission Park with the girl.

Saturday detoured to old school Clem’s Drive-in in Independence, where I’d HOPED to get a brain sandwich but had to settle for pretty precious pork tenderloin with opulent onion rings.

Then out for a cool night out at the Municipal Auditorium to see the KC Roller Warriors vs. the Northwest Arkansas Killbillies! (A friend skates for the Arkansans.) I still don’t understand the whole thing, but it’s wimmens on skates smacking into each other, so I’m pretty good with it all. All washed down with a tremendous triple cheeseburger at Winsteads!

Sunday morning, I headed with the aforementioned, and now sore, friend to Dim Sum at Bamboo Gardens for a healthy helping of homecooked jellyfish, tripe, and various other Fear Factor’es-que stuffs.

ANNNND there was the late announcement that I’ma be a new Associate Editor on Plots With Guns magazine!

Okay, next week, same fat channel, same fat time!

So, this week started with fun first Fridays in the KC crossroads, where we saw lotsa drawrigns and zombies. And, good eats at Grunauer restaurant for sausages and strudels and stuff.

Wednesday, awesome Ande Parks’ presentation at the KC Li-barry kicked major graphic-novels-as-art-and-literature ass. (Pickup his Union Station and Capote in Kansas so’s he can buy more cool hats.)

Tune in next Friday when I, hell I dunno, do something else or other… (There’s an anti-climactic sales pitch)
